How does PowerDMARC help prevent spoofing?

Spoofing refers to the practice of hackers and other cybercriminals impersonating trustworthy domain names to commit fraudulent, malicious acts. Through this practice, cyber criminals manage to infect the victim’s device with malware and receive valuable personal information (e.g. financial details).

The DMARC ( (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance) email authentication protocol can help users prevent successful spoofing attempts. It does so by leveraging SPF and/or DKIM validation, which means that, if an email does not pass either SPF or DKIM, it fails DMARC. By doing so, the protocol helps identify the potential reason(s) for the evaluation failure and prevent spoofing attempts before they take place.

The implementation of DMARC is however not an easy task, especially for those who are not technically savvy. You are required to publish a valid DMARC record on your DNS. You can do this manually, but it might be difficult, and time-consuming, and you might even end up with an inaccurate setup. This is because DMARC generates the data in XML, making it very hard to ‘decode’ and understand. This is when PowerDMARC comes in handy, as we help extract and translate raw XML data into a format that even non-tech-savvy individuals can understand.

Fast and Easy DMARC Implementation

You can use PowerDMARC’s setup wizard to implement SPF, DKIM, and DMARC in a fast and efficient manner.

  • First, sign in to your PowerDMARC account and click on the “Setup Wizard” tab.

  • Enter your domain and configure your DMARC record.

  • You can start with DMARC policy none (p=none) and then move to stricter policies (preferably “reject”) with time.

  • After choosing the policy, select the alignment modes for SPF and DKIM. In the initial phase, keep SPF and DKIM in the relaxed mode.

  • The system will fill the rua/ruf fields with the corresponding data and route your Aggregate and Forensic reports to PowerDMARC. You can choose how frequently you wish to generate and send the forensic reports.

  • As a last step, copy your DMARC value, publish the DMARC record on your DNS, and click “Complete Setup.” Congratulations, you’re all set!
